crime and violence

by Andrea O'Connell

I haven’t checked the actual statistics of which state in the U.S. is troubled with the highest number of murders, but it really seems to me that Florida has a groundswell of some of the most vicious crimes.

Having followed the Casey Anthony case for so long, I’d read the Orlando newspapers, see the television reports, and listen to the radio news on a daily basis.  It is plain that Orlando has its fair share of very violent crime – on a daily basis, too.  I’d focused on Orlando for so long, I’d missed a lot of what was going on crime-wise in my own neighborhood, in Broward County, Floria.

It’s all I can do to keep up with one case at a time – my work schedule won’t allow it, and I can barely keep up with my blog sometimes.  However, after reading the paper today and reading about the sickening terror in Norway in which 80, or so, young people were brutally murdered in the worst blood bath (in Norway), since the World Wars, a new reality about violence has sunk in.

Of course, when the violence has to do with children, it’s insanely heartbreaking.  It’s also unbelievable when children are the ones committing the violence.

Our local news has been filled of late with horrific and violent deaths of parents at the hands of their own children.  One story is worse than the next, and then the next one is even worse.

Parents brutally murdered by children who they’d nurtured for years.  This type of killing is called parricide, and this week in South Florida, two young men were charged with murdering one or both of their parents.

If that’s not bad enough, I was looking at my local online newspaper, the Sun-Sentinel, and happened to click on the mug shots of those who were arrested just today, and there were hundreds!   And, I think, boy I’m naive – I never dreamed there could be so many people arrested in a single day!

It’s big business for someone, isn’t it?  I guess the lawyers and the bail bondsmen do pretty well in this kind of atmosphere.

And after the terrific and carefree day I spent with my family and my dear little six-year old niece, this evening we were all sitting in my living room eating dessert when we heard three LOUD gun shots!  And then the police sirens where blaring and my brother went out to see what was going on, and he saw the police but no activity.  My neighborhood is safe, well I was robbed last year, so maybe it’s not that safe, but I have a sense that I’m safe in my community.  I hope it’s not a false sense of security, though.  Maybe it’s better to feel scared?

Violence is all around us.  Are there easy answers?  Hardly.  I don’t know of any. Do we build more jails?  That’s not a solution – the more jails you build, the more criminals you’ll have to fill them.  Build it and they will come would be true in this case.

My sister-in-law and I were talking about how to protect ourselves – she’s especially fearful of that because she’s a mom of a very beautiful six year old, my beloved niece.   And today the bad guys are so brazen they’ll try to hurt, rob, kill you in broad daylight.

The other side of this scary reality is the realization that it’s not wise to trust anyone, and I find that really sad.

Having to be afraid of a stranger – no matter if they’re young, old, or somewhere in between, is the new reality.  Well, maybe it’s not so new to other people, it is to me.

I’m an official airhead sometimes.

Andrea,I agree we are in very troubled times. Personally I feel it’s mainly due to the constant drive for more. More money, more gadgets, bigger, better whatever, and I want it now is the main cry. We’ve moved away from God and so there is the breakdown of the home, children are having children, and they can’t or won’t care for them. There is no longer respect for God,for parents, for country, for anything or anyone, even themselves. That in my opinion was the trouble with KC and the whole Anthony clan. Until we stop trying to give our children, and grandchildren everything their hearts desire at the moment and give them our time and attention and teach them respect for all living creatures. Teach them to bake cookies,or make a birdhouse or go cart. Take them to church and teach them about the loving God & Father of us all. Make God and our children our number one priority, and stop making the makers of the newest toy or gadget rich.

Okay I’m off my soap box. I will however continue to pray for this country and those that have the oversight of it. I KNOW that God IS the blessed controller.

A standing O, Faith! I couldn’t have said it better. As I was reading this post a proverb came to mind~

“Where there is no fear (respect) of God the people cast off restraint.”

An excellent quote which perfetly sums up my believes.

I thoroughly believe in a university education for both men and women; but … a knowledge of the Bible without a college education is more valuable than a college education without the Bible. Everyone who has a thorough knowledge of the Bible may truly be called educated, and no other learning… no matter how extensive… can form a proper substitute. – William Lyon Phelps

    I know – Iknow …
It’s like I simply dropped off the face of the earth, and for that I apologize to you, and the friends I’ve made here over the last three years…

Aside from my health issues, I felt the incredible need to just get away from everything and anything “C” related.

I refused to watch the only available ‘American Crime’ station HLN, and I refrained from even checking my email for weeks…

    I just couldn’t take it anymore –

After three long years, to come away feeling so defeated, and so disgusted in EVERY Justice System, I couldn’t bring myself to watch any more of it!

I have worked in the field of Law Enforcement, along with experience in a Paralegal capacity for over 20 yrs now, and though I’ve seen my fair share of *chit*, and disastrous court proceedings, this particular “C” case and trial, was BEYOND what I could continue to subject myself to, let alone watch, and participate in…

When I heard about little Leiby, it only served to push me further into my own little world…

I am still so broken over the whole “C” fiasco that played out before us, like a terrible GAME of Life, and my heart will forever ache and yearn for JUSTICE for little Caylee Marie.

Though there is NOTHING anyone can do now, other than boycott and try to ensure that the “C” NEVER PROFITS from her dispicable crime-show, I can only hope that KARMA will get her good!

And I hope she comes up QUICKLY, LOUDLY, with a whooping that is both IMMENSE, INTENSE, and incredibly SEVERE!

That “C” creature deserves only the worst of the worst that Madame Karma can dole out – I hope she suffers to no end!
From the day she strikes, and straight into eternity… I hope that bitch suffers!

Being that I am STILL dealing with so many health issues right now, I am still unable to return to work – I had surgery a few weeks ago, and I’m slated for another on Aug 3\11.
As much as I am missing work, I’ve been of the firm belief lately that it’s a good thing I’m not there right now, being that my view and stand on things is so freakishly opposite to where I have always stood in relation to crime and punishment.

I did read your one post a while back about slowly etching her out of your blog, and I have to say, I was incredibly relieved to read that you were going to eventually completely let that wench go…
She does NOT deserve any further fan-fair!

She deserves a life of lonliness, with only the nastiest of images to cross her mind and thoughts – AWAKE and ASLEEP, she deserves UGLY!
    Only and All – UGLY!

That said – I deserve MY LIFE back!

I am entitled to proceed from here, without any further thoughts or mention of HER that leave me enraged and disgusted at so much…

I have NEVER – In my entire working career…I have never let myself become so personally involved, only to be left so disconnected while working or partaking in a criminal matter before the courts.

I have done my job, well at that, and I have NEVER taken my work home!

This piece of shit, what she did, and what she no doubt, will continue to do, literally moved into my home…

She became all that I lived and breathed, even putting my health issues at high risk just to stay involved and ‘in the know’ of all that was transpiring…

Well, today I say – NO MORE!

Time for me to re-connect with the people I’ve come to trust and admire, the people who lived through this along side of me…

Time for me to re-connect with my own community, to serve and protect my people, and once again, become in the KNOW of what is transpiring in my city, my province, my country…

As much as I have always followed, and been aware of what is transpiring ‘Crime-wise’ in the United States, never have I lost myself in such a manner, leading to such a loss of belief and hope…

Never have I experienced such sadness and loss, especially due to a horrific crime that has occurred so far away from my own back yard…

Never has anything like this gotten the better of me –

Today, I take back what is mine!

She can rot in hell, running scared for her life, and I hope penniless, as her daughter finally rests in peace…

As for me, I get to feel FREE once again!

They say that ARIES individuals’ passion runs RED HOT!
Cross them, and their ICE is ETERNAL!

Well, I am an ARIES! True and to a “T”!

Let me say here, my passion is back!

I am FREE, and I am PASSIONATE!

I will fight once more, for all that I believe in, and for anyone needing assistance, guidance, and support due to being criminally attacked and hacked.

As for the disgrace and mockery made of the American Justice System with this case, SHE is NOTHING – And will always be just that!

As for the trial itself, and its outcome, not only played by, but with jokers, losers, and money-hungry freaks, they are NOTHING to me!

Not only do I feel I have been CROSSED, but the American people have as well!

    My ice is ETERNAL!

And this farce, with the exception of CAYLEE MARIE is DEAD to me!

Once again, I will hold firm to the belief that Karma WILL have her day with each and every one of them!
Because one can’t do NASTY, laugh in the face of everyone, and actually think that they’re going to get away with that!

Again, I apologize to you, Andrea!
To you, my friends, the bloggers and readers…

Though I may not be around as much as I used to, I am back to reading and will definately be participating where I can…

And with that, I am rid of all that pertains to that wicked and vile family!
    Good-bye to them!

And HELLO to a new day –
    Hello to my friends…
And more importantly – Hello to ME!

It feels good to be back!

Hey my dear, I have missed you!!!! I completely understand how you feel – and the outcome to this case seems wrong on so many levels because there WAS proof beyond any doubt to those of us following this case.
I look at what happened with this jury as either a freak occurrence – like happenstance that they came together. I also think that these 12 people were concerned only with going home, catch their cruise or vacation, and be done with the case… and well, there are so many things that went wrong with this jury and, heck, we don’t need to rehash it….
Suffice it to say, these 12 people will have to live with this horrible burden for the rest of their lives. They now know how wrong they were to not follow the law, look at the evidence and really deliberate as a jury should.

Anyway, it’s true, I’m not going to blog about this case – unless something interesting – or if new news happens. In the meantime, I’m sure happy that Casey Anthony is ferreted away out of sight – hope she’ll disappear for good, but that’s doubtful…. she will need to support herself somehow and she’ll resurface. She may end up wishing she had been found guilty with the hate that’s going to follow her the rest of her life.

I don’t wish her any ill-will because to send out those negative thoughts, in my opinion, will just come back in some form of negativity in my life. It’s best, like you say, to let it go. i will boycott anything connected with her or her lawyers because that’s a whole lot of negative energy there!
Maybe Casey Anthony will find peace someday. However, she has to live with herself for the rest of her life, and that, in itself, will be hell on earth.

    I ask:
Is it possible that with Florida having its ‘SUNSHINE LAWS’, this delivers and makes us privy to such atrociouss and vicious crimes.

Whereas the other States do not follow in that same “open information” format, it allows most to become that much more familiar with the crimes being committed, and brought to the forefront in the State of Florida.

Though we hear about the other States and the crimes committed there, we do NOT get, nowhere near the information that Florida Laws permit the people access to?

Could it be that, that makes Florida seem so crime-ridden?

I don’t know if that has an impact on the amount of crime in florida. Heck, we have the death penalty which is thought to prevent murder – but the DP doesn’t do a darn thing to change or help crime. Murder is a crime of passion, and reasonable thinking does not enter into the thought process when murderous passion is provoked.

The availability of documents via the Sunshine Law is only applied when someone (like the media) files a motion for the release of documents. Not very many cases in Florida, to my knowledge, have released documents like this – there has to be an interested party, I would think, demanding the law be applied. It was only because the media jumped on this case from the get-go that all the info was released. The media (and bloggers!) had an interest in the info.

I don’t think it did anything with the crime stats, though. The only thing it did was to put this case into the spotlight. Then, Jose Baez fanned the flames and jumped into center-ring. The rest is history now….

Oh! (now I remember) Andrea, you had said something days ago that troubled me, and didn’t feel it appropriate to bring up. With your blog, the same fear popped up again. So I hope I am not stepping out of align, when I suggest to ALL women, not just you, Andrea, but especially you, to take a self defense class! Either, the Sherrifs Dept or Police Dept, runs a national 3-4 day program, free or low-cost, called R.A.D. It saved, both, my daughter, and myself, our lives. They teach you, what, when, where, how, to ACT, and not REACT, safely, to survive. Andrea, being in a school environment, is a perfect opportunity to initiate an invitation to R.A.D. for all the women at your university, and the ladies here, that I come to know, respect, and care for. ~RahRah, with love

Oh my! I am so glad you told me this, RahRah! It’s a fantastic idea! went to their website http://www.rad-systems.com/index.html and looked up locations in Florida, and saw that there a few universities taking part. I am definitely going to suggest this for employees. I really do need to do something.

My homeowners association had a meeting with our local police recently, and they gave us tips to stay safe. They said that the best thing to do, if you feel scared, is to hit your alarm on your car key (if you’re in a parking lot). The Police said bad guys will run when then because they don’t want to draw attention to themselves. I thought that was great advise, and it’s always at the back of my mind when i’m out at night… though, I try not to be alone at night, but it’s sometimes unavoidable…
Thank you so much, again, RahRah…. and, please know that I welcome any idea, suggestion, feedback, etc., that you’d like to provide. And feel free to email me, too. 🙂

I’ve never posted to you but now I say Welcome Back. As disappointed and upset as I was when KC was set free I knew she wasn’t really free and until she repents she never will be. There is no amount of money, that without repentance, that will give her a normal life with the simple pleasures of friends and family. She will never know the love of a decent man and the joy of friendships. She will come to the end of her life and know that by her own hand, she never gave or recieved love.
1Co 13:1 ¶ Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
    4 ¶ Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
    5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;
    6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 ¶ Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
    1Co 13:1-8 NKJV

I will keep you in prayer
